We were delighted to welcome Will Dewhurst to Taylor Money Wealth Management for two days of work experience, following his proactive approach in reaching out to me directly to explore a career in finance.

Will spent time with each department and showed a genuine enthusiasm to understand the different roles that contribute to our work. He was engaged, curious, and eager to learn.

I’ve always been certain that I want a career in finance, but I've found it challenging to understand the nuances between different sectors. After completing an online simulation in asset management, I became particularly interested in wealth management. I applied for work experience at Taylor Money to gain practical insight into the field and to better understand whether this area aligns with my skills and long-term goals.

My conversation with wealth manager, Sophie Hendy, in particular provided valuable insights into building a successful career in wealth management. Her journey inspired me to prioritise finding a positive work environment that aligns with my values, while demonstrating how perseverance and determination are fundamental skills in this industry. What particularly stood out was her impressive progression through the company, achieved through dedication and consistently going above and beyond her core responsibilities. Sophie's story reinforced that success requires not just technical knowledge, but also a commitment to continuous development, strong relationship-building, and a proactive approach to career growth.

This experience has helped me to identify specific areas I need to develop to better prepare for my future career. Team members provided valuable recommendations for relevant modules and learning opportunities that would be beneficial for potential employers. The experience has also shaped my understanding of workplace dynamics and professional expectations. I am particularly grateful to several team members who shared practical advice on tasks and skills I should focus on developing during my studies to ensure I am well-prepared for entering the workforce.

My advice for other students considering work experience in financial services would be to actively pursue every opportunity available. You can never have too much work experience, as each placement offers unique insights and skills that will prove valuable in your future career. Furthermore, work experience provides an excellent foundation for professional networking and can open doors to opportunities that might otherwise be inaccessible. I would particularly encourage students to approach these experiences with curiosity and professionalism, as the connections and knowledge gained can significantly impact your career trajectory in the financial services sector.
